About the Speakers: Company: Faculty

Job Title: Master of Architecture
Graduates
Topic Overview:
Ever wondered what a zero-carbon or carbon neutral or
low-carbon city would look like? How should we design
future suburbs of Sydney in light of Climate Change?
Get some plausible answers with White Bay Eco-City 2050,
part of the Design Studio at the University of Sydney,
Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning.
The project is a collaboration between twenty senior
students and lecturer in sustainable urban planning,
Dr. Rafael Pizarro. The brief is relatively simple:
design a carbon neutral city for 15,000 people (6,800
residents and 8,200 daytime workers). While the project's
aim is to speculate about how cities would change
in response to global warming, the brief also recognises
that such prime foreshore land is extremely valuable
and that the project must also be commercially viable.
The project provides:
A comprehensive and viable plan for the redevelopment
of White Bay promoting environmentally and socially
sustainable urban design. A realistic transport infrastructure
which stems from the existing networks.
5 key precincts:
- Institutional, which involves the redesign of
the currently disused White Bay Power Station and
Glebe Island silos
- Low density mixed use development on the Balmain
waterfront
- High density mixed use development on Glebe Island
- Working harbour precinct specialising in small
racing craft commonly used in the inner harbour
- Agricultural precinct, using the vertical farms
developed by Prof. Chris Jacobs at Columbia University.
Brief summary
As an equal collaboration between twenty students,
the White Bay Eco-City project defines a new mode
of urban design practice. Collective decisions were
the result of spirited discussion and consensus. Working
together meant that the project could be resolved
and presented in a comprehensive way even after only
two and a half months work. Our public presentation
incorporates drawings, statistics, a 3.7 x1.2 metre
model, and a 15 minute film, "A Day in the Life
of the Eco-City." Speakers Biodata ( 1 Para only
) : The presentation will be given by a group of the
senior students who are currently completing the Masters
of Architecture at the University of Sydney and a
brief intro by the SRD convenor.
